What does a credit rating actually mean?

Submitted by Lisa Dudson on Thursday, 25 October 2007 Category: Saver of the Year 07 Have you ever seen a bank, insurance company, finance company or financial institution advertising their credit rating? Given the huge amount of information and all the different types of ratings, it's hardly surprising many people are confused about what they actually mean. With the recent failure of several finance companies it's important to get an understanding of how ratings work.

How PIEs will change the face of funds

Submitted by Lisa Dudson on Tuesday, 2 October 2007 Category: Saver of the Year 07 On October 1st PIEs (Portfolio Investment Entities) were introduced. Essentially they are a special tax investment entity type which a managed fund can apply for. Currently most managed funds are taxed at 33%, regardless of the marginal tax rate of the investors in the fund.

Why cash wouldn't be my long term investment strategy

Submitted by Lisa Dudson on Monday, 17 September 2007 Category: Saver of the Year 07 Only two months to go until the end of the competition. I think its anyone's guess as to what the final result will be. I think my term deposit strategy will have a pretty good shot at being close to the top, however if some of the managed funds have a good couple of months I could very easily be knocked off the top spot!

Where to invest during uncertain times?

Submitted by Lisa Dudson on Wednesday, 29 August 2007 Category: Saver of the Year 07 It's been a challenging few months in the investment world. Collapsing finance companies, erratic currencies, volatility in the sharemarkets, growing concern over high interest rates and the future of the housing market have created a fair amount of stress for many people.

Where should our Savers start?

Submitted by Lisa Dudson on Tuesday, 26 June 2007 Category: Saver of the Year 07 The first things to consider when investing is to work out what your objectives are and what your risk profile is. I did the online test to see if I was a saver or an investor and looked at my risk profile. As I wanted to ensure that I didn't lose money in the six months it was clear that I was a 'saver' not an 'investor' therefore I was limited to a term deposit or an on call account, so I chose the term deposit as it had a better rate of return for the same risk.
