Pathfinder is a boutique New Zealand based fund manager specialising in access to international asset classes. We aim to deliver smart, transparent and low cost international investments for New Zealand investors.
Pathfinder was set up in early 2009 and is owned by its two principals (John Berry and Paul Brownsey). John and Paul each have over 20 years' experience in New Zealand and international financial markets. Each also invests directly in all Pathfinder funds.
Each Pathfinder fund reflects our values:
Transparency: We believe investors have a right to all information about their investment. For this reason our investment methodology, processes, holdings and performance are all fully and clearly disclosed.
Sensible fee structures: Investors have a right to know the impact of manager fees on their investment - investors want certainty and not complex fee structures. To address this, our funds have a total fee cap which includes all running costs of the fund.
Clear alignment of interests: We do not charge performance fees as these typically do not provide an adequate alignment of interests between fund managers and investors. Instead we invest meaningful amounts of our own money in our funds on the same basis as investors. We believe that this provides the strongest alignment between investors and those managing their money.
Good governance and process: We have a strong focus on good governance and risk mitigation. Key features are oversight of funds by our trustee (Public Trust), oversight of Pathfinder by two strong independent directors (Catherine Savage and Sandy Maier) and the outsourcing of all fund accounting and unit pricing calculations to an independent specialist. The understanding of risk mitigation and process efficiency is also highlighted by the fact John and Paul each have over 20 years' high level experience in New Zealand and international financial markets.
