The first month of 2013 has left little to complain about, perhaps with the exception of bond investors. Global equities have recorded respectable gains in January as the much maligned fiscal wrangling in the US was partially solved and partially postponed. Indeed, the ‘crisis averted’ theme has only been perpetuated in January with a relative absence of bad news. Economic prospects have also been improving, but plenty of challenges remain, particularly for developed markets. Emerging markets also face challenges, but look set to pick up this year. In particular, the key economy of China looks to have reaccelerated, brushing off concerns of a hard landing.
